hello pals!
im writing to u from my orange chair in my living room in austin for one of the last (!) times, since i’m moving to la on may 26. i don’t actually have any shopping updates to share (except that i ordered new everyday oil, my absolute hero skin product that i justify splurging on bc its basically my cleanser AND moisturizer) but im in the mood to draft a little missive for my literal tens of subscribers, so here we are.
today im thinking about the wga members—some my friends and former colleagues, most strangers to me—who are picketing out in the streets as the industry powers that be attempt to double down on robbing them of all they’re entitled to. i have not so secretly dreamed of being a tv writer my whole life (someday, maybe??) and its extremely depressing to realize that its just not a path to stability or even financial solvency for many people anymore, but i am fired the fuck up seeing writers from my fav shows demand what they’re worth.
some losers are fighting w me on twitter over whether or not its ok to have hope for the concept of writing as a career, but im gonna stand firm on this: it is the job of those few of us who are still making a living in journalism or screenwriting or publishing to fight as hard as we can to make those industries tenable for the many, many talented people who can’t afford to survive within them. yes, things are bad, but i look around at wages in publishing rising as a direct result of the harper collins union strike/the hearst union winning their long-fought-for contract/the conde nast union (hi bbs!) winning all workers a 2.75% pay raise (it’s a start) and i think………….we are making change. and even if that change is tiny and incremental? it’s worth fighting for.
ok, now that we’ve talked about the noble craft of writing, let’s all clap for me for NOT perusing the mara hoffman sample sale bc even if its discounted down to like $50, i simply can’t afford it. i do have an exciting dress coming in the mail that i purchased for a wedding i’m going to in august, so i’ll be back in touch as soon as that comes. unless, of course, it looks like ass on me, in which case i will ship it the fuck back to shenzhen and be extremely mad for at least a week.
currently watching: sex and the city lol
currently listening to: the yellowjackets playlist on spotify (s2 is kind of shitty imo but the music is good)
currently abstaining from: weed! its been six days since i smoked and while i don’t see myself going straight-edge full-time, i think this little break (which i’m planning to be 3 weeks, but we’ll see if it feels good to keep it going longer) will be nice for me.
xoxo,
emma
