oh god dammit
i’ve come to the inevitable conclusion that i’m going to have to exercise every day, at least for the duration of this quar. i do not LIKE to exercise—i like “drinking, smoking, and ordering in restaurants”, to quote diane kruger in the tarantino hitler movie i unfortunately love—but i need the stupid fucking endorphins, and the built-in part of my day where i am using my body.
here is the sum total of my exercise history:
-successfully avoiding organized sports ages 0-12
-joining a gym in eighth grade when i was at Peak Misery, trailing off going almost immediately
-long pointless bike rides up the greenway to the bronx from my mom’s apartment in high school
-sporadic trips to my college’s very fancy gym, where natalie and anna and i would exercise about once a semester and buy ice cream and gossip the rest of the time
-regular elliptical use the summer after college at the sad new york sports club off of atlantic ave
-constant hiking in la, because there’s just not that much to do in that particular city when you have exactly 3 friends and zero cars
-constant biking in la feat. almost being hit by cars (see above re. lack of four-wheeled transportation)
-running—slowly, painstakingly—around the silver lake reservoir, taking in the high school track stars and out-of-work actresses and very fancy babies in hi-tech sports strollers (still my fav run/walk of all time)
- ‘showtune spin’ at the weho flywheel with hannah and about 100 of the most jacked gay dudes i’ve ever seen
-unhappily stationary biking at the sad crunch on flatbush
-SLIGHTLY more happily stationary biking on the ugly cheap amazon exercycle i bought for my room with my ridiculous conde nast “wellness credit”
-citibiking around, gettin’ it
-spin classes at the cursed girlboss flywheel in williamsburg with kate and maya
--running—just as slowly—in prospect park, making a weird and lovely little loop that has since been closed off, forcing me to go a longer and more stupid way that i’m still getting used to (or was, pre-pandemic)
these days, it’s a combination of hikes and bike rides in the hudson valley with eliza and zack, 20 min runs on the slightly stressful roads near my dad’s house, and zumba. what zumba workout do i do, you beg to know? well, i’ll tell you: it’s this one, and i’ve progressed to the point where i can do a whole 23 minutes of it correctly (i skip the 7 min floor part at the end, bc i hate floor.)
people we hate from the zumba video: renee, who is “advanced” and adds dumb little jumps to everything
people we don’t mind: aurelio, who is hot and encouraging
people we love: anna, who GOES SLOW and is clearly a chiller, you can tell from looking at her
i kind of like zumba, and sometimes even find myself looking forward to it. i’m much less hostile than i generally get in group fitness classes, and if my boob pops out its ok bc nobody’s there to see it! i hope i stick with it. i think i can.
