ok, i know keeping up with this substack must be extremely boring. like, even if you’re someone on Team Emma (aka best friend or parent or rax) who is in support of me spending less money on stupid shit i don’t need, it can’t be that interesting to read “hey guys i didn’t buy anything frivolous but here are some other musings” on repeat.
well, friends, today is a reward for hanging in there, bc i went all the way the fuck off and purchased not one, not two, but THREE bitchy pink accessories to go with the pale-pink dress i’m planning to wear either to the james beard awards in june (rax is nominated and i have to look as hot as humanly possible in their honor) or to my friend hannah’s wedding in august or, most likely, to both, unless my next chunk of book money hits in between and i get to spend a small chunk of the money i don’t immediately put into savings/invest on a new outfit for the wedding. we’ll see!
here is item 1: ganni rubber sandals, $110 w shipping (half off on the outnet)
these might be toeing (hehe) the line of what’s considered appropriate at a formal event, given that they’re basically fancy birkenstocks, but i just can’t spend any more money on high heels for Occasions, as i learned at jazmine and gabe’s wedding last summer when i secured a gorgeous pair of pale blue maryam nassir zadeh pumps to go w my selkie dress and had to change out of them and give my toast in platform crocs after approximately 5 minutes. i feel like i’ll actually be able to wear these day-to-day (assuming they’re comfy), and they go with The Jacket, so i’m determined to make them work w the dress.
item 2: staud pvc leather-trimmed handle bag, $68 on therealreal with a 30% off coupon
is this not the bitchiest item you’ve ever seen???????? i don't normally spend money on bags, instead shoving everything into free promotional tote bags, but i wanted to get a room shop chouchou bag to go with my beards/wedding outfit, and when i realized they were sold out of the color i wanted, i decided to splurge a little bit on something i’d be excited to wear year-round. also, i like the idea of my sandals and my purse matching; it feels like it’ll dress up even my most shitbaggy outfits.
item 3: nars hardwired pink glitter eyeshadow, $11 w nars’s half-off sale and free shipping
i’ve learned from my face eye glitter (which i save for special occasions bc it gets fucking everywhere, but which goes a long way when i’m in the mood to look like disco shrek) that it’s worth investing in expensive eye glitter, and this is the fanciest once i could find for basically drugstore price that went with my dress/purse/shoes without being an exact match.
there’s a lot of change coming up in my life, as i leave for la in two weeks (!!!), but at least i know i have some fun surprises coming in the mail before i go. i still get stressed spending this kind of money on clothes/accessories/makeup, but i’ve been doing really well lately in terms of not spending impulsively and i think it’s ok to invest in some good-old-fashioned fun shit once in a while. remind me to poshmark those MNZ heels when i get to new york this summer.
